Sun terrace – an addition of a special kind

As soon as the sun is low and the Dachstein massif glows in the reddish light of the setting sun, it would be time for a “Sun-Downer” with beer or wine on the sun terrace of the FreiraumHütte. In addition, summer temperatures and a fantastic view of the mountains would invite you.

We have been dreaming of this atmosphere for many years. Now finally we start to realize our dream. A terrace in the direction of the valley, i.e. in a south-west position, is to be tackled this summer – an extension of a special kind.

Terrace construction – the interior construction

Last autumn we already planned the terrace and after an extensive search we were able to find the right local partner for this construction project. As soon as the last snow of the new year had melted, we started with the first construction project: We inserted a terrace door into the hut wall in the living room so that we could go directly from inside to the terrace in the future.

Terrace construction – the exterior finishing

Then the outdoor work began. First, four concrete piles were poured into the ground on the west side of the hut as a base for the terrace construction. Bad weather complicated and interrupted the work. But as soon as the weather improved a bit, the work continued. The construction company placed a rectangular wooden frame on the posts, which was firmly attached to the concrete piers. Then followed the wooden floor with a dimension of four metres in width and five metres in length. Thus the first part of the wooden terrace is now finished, and was inaugurated immediately with Zirbenschnaps of Otto, farmer above the FreiraumHütte.

Terrace construction – the material

We deliberately chose larch wood for the terraces, as it is very weather-resistant and grows in the woods around the FreiraumHütte. A small staircase leading to the barbecue area is also made of larch wood. We were able to order the missing balustrade, a made-to-measure glass construction. This is to be delivered and installed in the next weeks. Until then, please enter and use the terrace with caution.
